CrossFit begins with the sincere belief in fitness. It is a strength and conditioning program designed to prepare you for life and for sport. It is part of the training methodology used by Olympic athletes, military and law enforcement officers, elite college athletes, and MMA fighters. In short, CrossFit benefits people of all ages and all athletic capabilities. CrossFit can be adapted for anyone interested in improving their fitness and quality of life.
In implementation, CrossFit is, quite simply, the “sport of fitness.” Harnessing the natural camaraderie, competition, and fun of sport or game yields an intensity that cannot be matched by other means. Using whiteboards as scoreboards, keeping accurate scores and records, running a clock, and precisely defining the rules and standards of performance, CrossFit motivates unprecedented output.
The aim of CrossFit is to forge a broad, general and inclusive fitness. The CrossFit program is built to prepare individuals for any physical contingency. Life is unpredictable (much more so than sport), so real world fitness must be broad and not specialized. CrossFit workouts are designed to maximize this broad, inclusive fitness. CrossFit workouts are constantly varied, functional movements executed at high intensity.
Variety – Variety is good; it’s the spice of life. People have to be ready for the unknown and the unknowable, just like life, which can be very unpredictable. Workouts are very rarely repeated. The only time workouts are repeated is for measuring progress. The three modalities that CrossFit uses in its workouts are metabolic conditioning (M), gymnastics (G) and weightlifting (W).
Functional – CrossFit uses large muscle groups in its movements. These movements are functional movements which are common in sports and life. Muscles are not used in isolation. Functional movements prepare people for anything that sport (or life) may throw at them.
Intensity – CrossFit is intense. The workouts are timed and extremely taxing. This is what gets results. Workouts performed at high intensity cause forced adaptation.
