Growing up watching Arnold Schwarzenegger and Sylvester Stallone on the big screen, I spent a great deal of time in my youth trying to hone a physique that resembled that of a bodybuilder. I became a typical gym rat, and I experimented with protein shakes and other health supplements to get that ideal buffed body. After mixed results and realizing the futility of trying to look like Mr. Olympia, I eventually gave this up and focused more on other fitness and sports endeavors like cycling, hockey and swimming, but I still maintained a weight training routine three or four times a week.

Over the years, I slowly made the transition to more functional type workouts and I eventually switched over to calisthenics full time around 2007 after watching YouTube videos of guys working out at local parks, doing calisthenics-type workouts on horizontal bars and parallel bars. I was simply astonished by their strength and stamina and after hitting a few parks of my own while living and working in South Korea, I realized the joy and incredible benefits of calisthenics and gymnastics.

In 2010, I discovered CrossFit, and with its discovery I have taken my fitness to a whole new level. It has given me a tremendous boost and has made me realize that when it came to fitness, I wasn’t realizing my full potential. Nowadays, I divide my time between CrossFit and outdoor activities such as mountain biking and hiking.

All in, I have over 15 years of teaching experience and I’ve taught in Canada, Japan and Korea, covering courses such as physical education, mathematics, business English, academic writing and academic presentations.

Now, CrossFit provides me with an incredible avenue for pursuing an elite level of functional fitness and being able to teach and share that with members of the Newfoundland community is an absolute joy.

I have been active all of my life, but nothing compares to CrossFit. From the day I was first introduced to it by my brother James, I was hooked. I was immediately drawn to the intensity of the workouts that allowed me to push myself past my perceived limits – both physically and mentally.

I am the mother of 4 children. Being a mom, I understand the difficulty of balancing fitness goals and the demands of family and work. However, I also realize how important my health is to myself and those around me. I have more energy, more desire, and a better attitude toward life because of CrossFit. I approach my daily workouts with a lot of enthusiasm. I look forward to that time during the day when I can relieve stress, sharpen my focus and discipline and continually challenge and improve myself. Staying healthy and fit is necessary for me to have the energy to balance my busy life.

I am dedicated to helping you achieve your fitness goals. I want to see you succeed. I look forward to working with you as you push past the limits of what you never thought possible for yourself.

I have been involved in sport and fitness all my life. From the early beginnings on pond and hockey arenas, to school sports, to the sports of adulthood, fitness has always been a part of my life.

Like others, I went through many phases in my fitness journey, from part time runner, to lifting weights, to team and individual sports such as badminton, martial arts and hockey. I have done all the fad workouts, from the early beginnings of aerobics through to the newer trends like P90x or Beachbody Insanity, with mixed results and one definite conclusion - lack of variety leads to stagnation!

Around 2009, I was looking for something different, some good functional workouts to throw into my routine, when an internet search brought me to Crossfit.com. With limited equipment, and even less know how, I started experimenting with different workouts, learning about WODs, but mainly watching in amazement as CrossFit athletes performed movements at high intensity while demonstrating incredible speed, strength and endurance. I was hooked.

Fast forward to 2012 and the introduction of the first CrossFit box in Mount Pearl, NL. In the first weeks, I was quickly humbled by my lack of fitness and strength, thinking all along that I was in at least moderately decent shape. Well, I was wrong, and I was indeed humbled over and over again as I struggled with the foundational movements and survived the introductory WODs. However, I was hooked on the variety and the sense of community. I completed the Level 1 Trainer Certification in January 2013 and have not looked back. I still play hockey and badminton on a regular basis, but CrossFit has brought a whole new degree of readiness to these sports for me. I feel stronger, faster and more confident in all respects.

I have been involved in coaching sports for 20+ years, in volleyball, hockey and badminton. I now look forward to developing my coaching experience in this new sport, the sport of fitness.

After a couple of years of on/off visits to a big box gym, I felt like I was going through the motions with no real progress and certainly wasn't enjoying myself.  I joined CrossFit in February 2012 and my only complaint is that I didn't do so sooner!

Watching a community of people grow and support each other while having lots of fun is what keeps me coming back every day.

Being able to help others is something I've always been passionate about so the ability to coach at CrossFit Islander is the perfect fit.
